How to decorate your home like a mature sophisticated adult.

So I arrived home from work today, opened the door to my apartment and was quite surprised to discover a fluffy black cat. Then I looked up and saw a table I'd never seen before. Looked around a bit more...where'd all this crap come from? It took a few seconds...yup I walked into the wrong apartment. Apparently I'm not entirely settled in yet.
I have a disturbing amount of stuff so I think getting unpacked and organized will take awhile. I've been trying to spend a bit of time each day making the new place feel like home. My method for decorating the apartment is: Buy old stuff from antique malls, Goodwill and Value Village. Also accept donations of second hand old stuff. Mix in with new stuff (such as picture frames, plant pots and plastic dinosaurs) from the dollar store. Paint, frame, hang and/or display stuff.
Ta-Dah!

Food Porn

I was going to show off some pictures of the new apartment, but forgot my memory card at the old apartment, so you get to make do with me talking about food. I went grocery shopping at the Walmart in town today for the first time. It made me sad (and not only because the woman in front of me in line was buying elastic waisted pleated shorts and pastel coloured golf shirts for herself) Walmart doesn't seem to really sell food. It sells products in packages and boxes of things that you can eat, but I can't actually call it food. Some people may find it strange, but I enjoy grocery shopping. Back in the days before the Grumpy Danish I'd spend at least a good hour at the grocery store wandering up and down the aisles finding new wonderful things. (Grocery shopping with the Grumpy Danish was usually more along the lines of bickering and grabbing whatever was quick to make) Even better then regular grocery stores are ethnic grocery stores. I've wandered through giant Chinese grocery stores, Russian grocery stores, Armenian, Arabic and Dutch grocery stores. You never know if you're going to be delighted, confused, surprised or hungry. Also fun are markets like the St Lawrence market in Toronto, local farmers markets and specialty stores like bakeries. I love the smells and the sights. The whole atmosphere is so different, that's what food should be about. Walmart is convenient and cheap and probably serves some people quite well. I'll probably shop there on occassion, but I'll be wishing I was shopping for real food the whole time.

Trashy Fashion

At long last months of braiding plastic bags together and cutting up coffee cups paid off. I present to you the Trash Dress! We were up against some tough competition, a lot of the other entries were designed by people with clothing lines or attending college for design. We didn't end up winning, but we celebrated like we did anyways. I'm really happy with how it turned out and had a blast putting it together. The people I worked with are amazing people and awesome friends :)
The dress is 95% garbage, we just used some wire, glue and velcro to hold it together. The jewelery I made out of broken glass found in a parking lot and wire.

Eat your heart out Karl Lagerfeld

It's not finished yet, but here's a sneak peak at the dress so far, still needs to be fitted a bit more and we need to add more layers of cups (it'll be going down to the floor like a ball gown) Our model wasn't there for a couple days, but fortunatley we had Tom whose young girlish figure makes a perfect substitute. lol.

Seperation anxiety

Know what's a great way to avoid packing? Blogging about packing instead. Packing is much like cleaning, It's neven been one of my strong points. I always manage to find something that's more interesting to do (and pretty much anything is more interesting then packing or cleaning) I worked on packing some of my jewelery and purses today. Last count I had 60 or so purses (last count was also a couple years ago) I've never even attempted to count my jewelery. I won't be unpacking them for another two weeks, so trying narrow down a few pieces to do me in the mean time is increadibly difficult. I like choice. At any given time I carry at least 3 different lipsticks in my purse, so that I can change it up if I feel like it. How am I possibly supposed to know which pieces of jewelery I'll want to wear ahead of time for the next two weeks?
:(
allright allright, off to go do some packing.
(maybe)
